Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

BT – Cuverville Island

[Caveats: This is where the number of photos starts to get out of hand. Antarctica is magnificent and atmospheric. Penguins are very photogenic. The consequence of these and other related facts is that I took over 1800 photos on the Antarctic leg of the Big Trip. You’re not going to see all of them. You may, […]

BT – The Drake Passage

The Drake Passage is the 800km wide body of water between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. It has a bit of a reputation for being unkind to the feeble of stomach. I had a seasickness patch, which helped a bit, though not quite as much as I hoped. Fortunately the two-day trip was, in fact, […]

BT – Ushuaia

When 2016 started I had no inkling that I would be going on a Big Trip at the end of the year, although I had started thinking about doing something a bit major in the travel line using the long-service leave payout I received when I left the University of Melbourne, and I was thinking of […]

Happy Christmas 2016

[Dateline 22 December 2017: Whoops, in the rush to head off on the “Big Trip” I forgot to post this last year! I think I remembered to mail all the ones I intended to send; they may even have arrived earlier than they usually do because I had to get them done before December 15! Anyway, here is the […]

12 of 12, December 2016

The first half of December has been rather hectic, and, since I am embarking on a much anticipated holiday in three days’ time, all the deadlines are coming to a head in frantic fashion.

Fortunately I had technology to remind me it was the 12th.

An email reminded me that the cleaners were going to be cleaning our […]

Midlands 2016-#22N

Yesterday’s north-bound trip was my last trip for the year associated with teaching/professional learning (there’s a faculty meeting still to come). As I had a non-work related commitment following my class in Launceston I was driving my own car, which meant I had a bit more freedom to take some detours.

One of the detours was nearly […]

12 of 12, November 2016

I’ve had a work day, a Church service day, and a photographic day (even though the camera du jour was the iPhone).

I needed to get some preparation done for another day of professional learning that is coming up, and, after designing one of the activities at home, I headed down to uni to work on some […]

[RST] Fog (and Moods of the Mountain #83)

[It has been a while since the last “Relief Society Thoughts” message (the occasional homily-thingies that I write for the women at Church) and this one kind of explains why. It also incorporates a bonus Moods of the Mountain photo plus a recycled one, because they fit.]

For a number of reasons my last 18 months or […]

Lauderdale coastal walk

I have been trying to be more active lately in preparation for a big adventure at the end of the year, and so I have been seeking walks and hills. This afternoon I tried out a new track, the part of the Tangara Trail that runs from Roches Beach at Lauderdale towards Seven Mile Beach. The […]

Moods of the Mountain #82

At the end of a glorious spring day I am reminded of why I love living where I live.

The full “Moods of the Mountain” collection […]
