Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Good to get some test questions right

I nearly struggled with this one this morning.

1. Match the products in the left column with the correct place of application in the right column:

Product
Place of application

Gel
Teeth

Moisturiser
Face

Toothpaste
Hair

Fortunately my personal product list isn’t any longer than this, otherwise I’d be in real trouble.

[Edited to add: Just in case you don’t read the comments, I should point out […]

Cold realities of entitlement and expectation

After doing a few odds and ends this morning, I decided to head up to the summit of Mt Wellington and wander around in the cold wind and remaining snow remnants. I walked along the South Mt Wellington track for a while, among the open rocks and shrubs, thankful for my down jacket since the wind […]

Horrorlogical wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff

In a previous post I acknowledged that the timekeepers in my life are somewhat erratic. At family dinner on Sunday night my Hobart brother reminded me of this fact by pointing out the rather divergent set of times recorded by the chronometers in the kitchen and living area. My two minute dash around the upstairs collection […]

Spam by any other name is still spam

There is a special class of spam reserved especially for academics: the vanity award.

It’s difficult to imagine what these people think I might have done in 2013 to deserve being recognised as one of the Top 100 Educators in 2013, since apparently I have no PhD and they think I am still at my previous workplace […]

This could turn out to be a ridiculous undertaking

There are all sorts of crazy ideas floating around the internet. Most I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole (and there are possibly many more I try to avoid even knowing about!). One of the more interesting ones, however, is a drawing challenge, in which 100 themes are provided and you’re supposed to come up with […]

More grumbling about matters pedantic

Dear Blogspot’s Spambot Detector

The first “word” is a number. The second “word” is a meaningless jumble of letters, and while, mathematically speaking, it might be regarded as a word, it does not exist in any written human language and doesn’t even yield one hit with Google.

What’s more, a robot could tell you this.

Please prove you’re not […]

Bad pun 7: Integrating Differentiated Instruction

I have just seen something about “Integrating Differentiated Instruction”.  Given the inverse relationship between integration and differentiation, surely “Integrating Differentiated Instruction” is just “Instruction + c”?

(This is one of those puns for which the size of an appreciative audience is likely to be rather small*. It may even be less than 2.)

* It lies within the […]

Just in case the Mayans get it right

I hereby declare that I do not think the world will end on 21/12/2012.

I am, however, prepared to admit my error afterwards if I […]

Life’s little mysteries #7a and #7b

#7a: Why do the cleaners fold a pointy end on the toilet paper in hotel bathrooms?

#7b: Are there really people who would be bothered if […]
