Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

A holiday break

As you can imagine, the last few weeks have been challenging, as Lisa’s children and I have been navigating the changes and emotions that have been consequences of Lisa’s passing. The school holidays gave us an opportunity to have a bit of a break from all of that, with a friend offering us the use of […]

12 of 12, May 2019

A rather miscellaneous collection of photos for this month’s 12 of 12.

Over breakfast I finalised the preparation of the lesson I had been asked to give at Church today.

This is the view from the room in which I taught the lesson. I reckon it has the best view of any chapel in the world (based on […]

Sunset at Lewisham foreshore

I haven’t explored the Lewisham foreshore before, but took a short stroll this evening just before sunset. It was quite peaceful and beautiful, and I think it will be worth visiting again, and with something more photographically competent than my phone (the phone hasn’t done too badly, but I could have had a bit more fun […]

Because you can never have too many hikes

The weather over Easter has been awesome, and with a good friend and her husband visiting from Queensland in search of hikes, I grabbed my brother on Monday and the four of us headed down to the Hartz Mountains National Park. It was here that we realised that the weather wasn’t universally awesome … or, at […]

An afternoon jaunt up Collins Cap

Easter Saturday dawned pleasantly, allowing me to take the APs for a morning drive (through interesting countryside, but I didn’t take photos). In the afternoon, having returned them home, the day became more spectacularly autumn blue mild, and I couldn’t let it go to waste. I threw some snacks, a drink, a map, some warm […]

Goats Beach with the APs

I rang Mum and Dad to see if they would like to come for a drive this afternoon, and we headed off down to Cremorne, Clifton Beach, and, finally Goats Beach. They are not able to be as adventurous with walking as they once were, but they managed a little doddle onto the sand at Goats […]

Port Arthur kayak

I headed south with a friend and her family for the Australia Day long weekend and we stayed at a holiday house in Carnarvon Bay. From a water perspective, this is “just around the corner” from Port Arthur, and one afternoon I launched my kayak and went for a paddle around the coast.

There is a lovely […]

Another drive with the APs

Circumstances had curtailed my earlier-in-the-year plans to take my APs on a trip away, but I still had plenty of accumulated leave … just no capacity to actually take some of it in a nice big block. However, I could arrange to escape for a day, and so I duly did, and took my folks for […]

Beach studies

Today I went for a stroll along Red Ochre Beach (near Dodges Ferry) with a friend and her family. There are lots of interesting textures and patterns, and so I took some photos.

The sandstone cliffs are eroding and the layers were highlighted in the later afternoon light.

Enjoy this one, geologists:

A collection of ramshackle boat sheds adorn […]

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion Temple) and Ryoanji

On my last morning — where, according to one sign, it was 40°C — I managed a couple of excursions before my flight homeward. My first port of call, and priority for the morning, was the Kinkaku-ji Temple (officially called Rokuon-ji), site of the famous golden temple. The highlight of the trip is actually the […]
